History of Muzium Galeri Tuanku Fauziah (MGTF)

This picture is taken when the MGTF building was a British Military Officer Mess on its ground floor and a hospital ward on its upper floor. The building was known as B01. The area of MGTF was an English nobleman's estate which owned by David Brown, a spice planter. Then, the area was given to the British Army and it was named 'Minden' which was named after a town in Germany.

The plan to establish a museum in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was initially proposed after the establishment of the School of Humanities and the introduction of Fine Arts programme in 1971 and 1972 respectively.

USM First Chancellor , Tan Sri Hamzah was the one who triggered toward the establishment of a University Museum. Then, it was followed by the Second USM Chancellor, Tun Haji Hamdan (1971 to 1982). He is responsible in establishing Museum and Art Gallery of USM.

The Museum and Art Gallery was officially opened on 21st January 1982 and it was officially opened as MGTF on 19th March 2007.
